A group of cruise passengers stranded off the coast of Africa spent 6 days chasing the ship to get back on
That 13-night sailing is five nights longer than the preceding cruise, but its starting price is $3,799 — a $3,000 difference. The Haven Courtyard, which houses a sundeck, padded lounges, pool and Jacuzzis, is simply stunning. Restricted to Haven guests ages 16 and older, it has an all-weather retractable roof. With courtyard attendants to bring you fresh fruit, drinks or extra towels, this private sanctuary is a great place to read, relax or take a swim. The light-filled restaurant feels intimate, seating no more than 100 people with additional space for 40 more on an outside deck.
What types of accommodations are offered at The Haven on Norwegian Encore?
British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary. Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September. For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland. If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice.
These penthouse staterooms include dining and living room areas, specious bedrooms, and balconies. This suite features chic decor alongside a master bedroom, second bedroom, private bathroom, living room area, and balcony. For the ultimate luxurious experience aboard Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) vessels prospective passengers should consider booking accommodations in Norwegian exclusive, The Haven. The price point for booking accommodations in the Haven is higher than rooms in the rest of the ship. In exchange, you will have more space, fewer crowds and quiet public areas. Disembarking after a cruise is a bit different than the experiences of first-day boarding.
Travelers who book these suites get VIP treatment compared to their shipmates. Entry-level suites on the nicest ships are not the windowless closets you'll find on some of the mass-market ships. They're spacious cabins with either windows or private balconies and separate sleeping and sitting areas; many have nicely appointed, reasonably sized bathrooms and often walk-in or large closets. You'll get the same personal service, have access to the same gourmet dining and can enjoy the same ship amenities (a spa, a serene pool deck, social lounges and more) as folks in the top suites.
However, "adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions" meant that the ship could not dock safely, a spokesperson for the cruise line said. The passengers found themselves stuck on São Tomé and Príncipe, an island nation of some 220,000 people off West Africa, in what the cruise line called a "very unfortunate situation." Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March. The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.
Of course, this is always a personal decision based on preferences and travel budget. The Haven Restaurant on Norwegian Prima even offers both indoor and outdoor seating. In terms of in-room amenities, there’s a nespresso machine and luxury bath products. You will also notice upgraded linens, pillow-top mattresses, plush bathrobes and slippers, and oversized bath towels.
Opt for the next suite level up — a 450-square-foot penthouse suite with a 93- to 103-square-foot balcony — and prices start at $9,299. That's an increase of $3,800, all for a suite you won't spend much time in on this port-intensive itinerary. Measuring 572 square feet, these suites have a separate bedroom with bath, living and dining area, balcony, and a half bath for guests. Here, the menu offers a range of gourmet dishes exclusive to Haven guests. And if that’s not enough, you can order anything from any of the other restaurants or main dining on board and complimentary room service is always available.
It offers upgraded accommodations, butler and concierge service, and exclusive access to a range of other special amenities and privileges (to be described below). Many of The Haven’s spaces are child friendly, while some spaces are reserved for older and adult guests. The Courtyard pool area for example is accessible to all guests, while The Haven Sundeck is reserved for guests 16 years and older. The Courtyard area has a mix of lounge chairs and seating for guests to enjoy.
Some of these opulent Courtyard Penthouse with Balcony's are designed to be a romantic hideaway ideal for two with a round queen-size bed. Others offer floor-to-ceiling windows and room for an additional guest. A group of passengers left stranded on a small African island after missing a boarding deadline finally managed to rejoin their cruise ship on Tuesday after chasing it for almost a week. Small, all-inclusive line SeaDream is a solid example of how affordable transatlantic sailings can get. In 2025, SeaDream 1 will sail its last Mediterranean cruise of the season from Barcelona to Malaga, Spain, and cruise prices start at $6,799 for an eight-night cruise. The ship then sails from Malaga across the Atlantic to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
But first of all here is a little sneek peek inside The Haven on Norwegian Joy. With the priority embarkation that comes with The Haven, your vacation starts the moment you step on board, long before the ship even leaves port. Also, since this was a media sailing, we could not take full advantage of all the services available, like in-room dining. Many cruisers claim once you stay in The Haven, it’s hard to go back to a regular stateroom. Since we have never stayed in The Haven on any other NCL ship, we can not comment on how The Haven on Norwegian Prima compares to others in the fleet.
Now, it’s important to note that not everything on the ship is included in The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line. For instance, if you want access to Vibe Beach Club or the Mandara Spa, that will cost extra. There are no spa cabins in the Haven that include access to the thermal suite. Further, amenities like the Prima Speedway and the Galaxy Pavilion will still be an up-charge for Haven guests on Norwegian Prima.
The Sundeck has a hot tub, plenty of lounge day beds, and a private bar for guests of The Haven. Passengers booked in The Haven have access to their very own pool and sundeck area, exclusive to guests of The Haven. The Haven Courtyard and Sundeck features a pool, hot tub, and lounge chairs.
Speak with the concierge about the availability of ship-sponsored excursions. In contrast to independently exploring the port town, all the planning is done by the cruise line. Depending on the destination, you can signup for bus tours, walking tours, adventures like snorkeling, cultural experiences and more. For those who like to dine in the room, a white tablecloth service is included. Simply select your meals from the menu and in-suite service will arrive, set up your table and whisk it all away when you’re done.
